  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the mixture is bubbly and lightly golden.
    • Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, continuing to whisk until the sauce is smooth and begins to thicken, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika (if using) until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  3. Assemble the Dish:
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the baking dish.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
    • Repeat with the remaining potato slices and cheese sauce.
  4. Bake the Potatoes:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top (if using).
    • Continue to bake, uncovered, for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
